The LGBTQ+ community faces specific health challenges at higher rates. Some major health concerns include HIV/AIDS, mental illness, substance use, transgender health and sexual /physical violence. The bottom line is that many LGBTQ+ individuals are likely to experience challenges in getting care. These include gaps in coverage, affordability, and stigma, including poor treatment from healthcare professionals. The OutCenter is working to engage more medical professionals to offer more LGBTQ+ services and provide a portal to local and regional resources

Resources are limited in this area for Transgendered Services . The University of Michigan has compiled a list of providers and services . what we're working on...

LGBTQ+ Competent Healthcare and Patient Safety Project is a collaborative project funded in part by United Way of Southwest Michigan. The collaborating partners are OutCenter Southwest Michigan, Mosaic Health and Healing Arts (the only truly inclusive medical practice serving Southwest Michiganders), and SAGE MetroDetroit (a state-wide organization working to bring equity to the lives of LGBTQ+ elders).
This project was developed to address the healthcare disparities experienced by LGBTQ+ people living in Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren Counties. It accomplishes this by providing in-depth and comprehensive consultations and workshops that increase the capacity of healthcare people and practices to better reach and more equitably respond to the needs of this population.
If you are interested in learning more about the project or services and support provided to healthcare workers and practices, please email us at
