OutCenter Southwest Michigan Responds to Post-Election Anti-Trans, Anti-Equality Sentiments

In light of the recent national election, the stakes for trans rights and LGBTQ+ equality have never been higher. Across the country, political discourse surrounding these critical issues has intensified, leaving many LGBTQ+ individuals and allies uncertain about the future. At OutCenter Southwest Michigan, we want our community to know this: we see you, we stand with you, and we are unwavering in our commitment to protecting your dignity, rights, and ability to live authentically.

Trans people have increasingly been used as targets in political debates, even by those claiming inclusive platforms. Some representatives have labeled trans rights as too divisive to defend, despite data from the Human Rights Campaign showing otherwise. Only 4% of voters cited “opposing transgender surgeries” as a key issue, and most who saw the slew of alarmist anti-trans ads called them “mean-spirited” and preferred a focus on other topics. Those attributing political losses to the trans community should instead reflect on their missed opportunities to unapologetically support the collective struggle of marginalized and oppressed communities worldwide.

Further, the acceptance of the LGBTQ+ movement faces relentless threats from those weaponizing fear to undermine human rights for political gain. Some seek to question the legitimacy of Title IX and marriage equality for the sake of bigotry and political coercive control. These attacks demean queer individuals and threaten our core values of fairness and freedom. The defense of LGBTQ+ rights, in the face of political agitation and intolerance, is a defense of the dignity and humanity of our entire community.

At OutCenter, we are even more driven to attain our goal of creating safe and affirming spaces for all people. Through training, workshops, consulting, direct action, and advocacy, we will continue our life-saving and necessary work in our local municipalities, schools, organizations, faith groups, and the public square. Contact us today to find out how you can support LGBTQ people and their families across Southwest Michigan by visiting our website at outcenter.org.
